Research & development

Advancing the science of harmonics and sound.

Harmonic Sentry is a research and development company creating advanced, novel tools that turn vibration, sound, and electrical harmonics into clear, useful measurements, putting instrument-grade capability into the devices people already carry.

What we do

Turning harmonics into answers.

Every running machine broadcasts its condition through vibration, sound, and electrical harmonics. Our work is finding new ways to read those signals, and building the tools that make that reading simple, fast, and affordable.

Harmonic analysis

Extracting meaning from the frequencies machines produce: speed, load, wear, and anomalies.

Sound & vibration sensing

Using everyday devices as precision instruments, so no bulky external hardware is required.

Novel approaches

Unconventional methods and modern signal processing that replace expensive, specialized tools.

Advanced tools

Turning research into practical, field-ready instruments that technicians can actually use.

Our first product

MotorTach

A no-contact tachometer that reads an electric motor's RPM and load in seconds, using nothing but an iPhone. It's the first tool to come out of our work in harmonics and sound. It works best on constant-speed motors, from HVAC and municipal water & wastewater to industrial and agricultural equipment, with VFD-driven support still experimental.

HumHarmonics

A no-contact transformer diagnostic that turns an iPhone into a harmonic analyzer. It listens to a transformer's hum and reads its Total Harmonic Distortion and the 60 Hz harmonics in seconds, with no probes, no wires, and no shutdown. It is the next tool to come out of our work in harmonics and sound, built for the technicians who keep dry-type, pad-mount, and substation transformers running.

Who we are

Four decades at the leading edge.

Harmonic Sentry was founded by Clifford Jones, who built the first variable-frequency drive Westinghouse ever sold in 1982 and has spent his career at the front edge of motors, drives, controls, and automation, from early PLC and industrial software to the control system for the Fukushima emergency cesium-removal system. Harmonic Sentry is where that experience meets modern signal processing and machine learning: a small R&D company focused on building the advanced measurement tools he always wished he'd had in the field.
